Issue 190 of the SNYC Newsletter
Greetings everyone. If you live in a place that observes Daylight Savings Time, make certain that the time setting on your camera is correct. Actually, it’s a good idea to check every once in awhile that it’s the right time. That’s especially true when you’re traveling.
I am an artist, writer and photographer in addition to providing street photography workshops. Sometimes I find myself oh so busy that it’s difficult to find time to get everything done. My apologies for being a little late getting this issue out. And for making it a brief one.
A very big thank you to all my new and returning customers! I couldn’t do it without you. It’s a great joy to meet everyone and share some tips and tricks while shooting in the city! As well, thank you to all the new and regular subscribers. I am so happy that you enjoy my thoughts on street photography!
As always, Happy Shooting. If you’re not happy shooting there may be a good way to change that. Do leave a comment.
The real act of discovery consists not in finding new lands but in seeing with new eyes. Marcel Proust

I write this newsletter to share my thoughts & experiences on street photography. I hope that you find it of use in your journey. If you are able to, you can support me by buying me a coffee. No sweat if you’re unable to contribute. The newsletter is free for all. Thanks to everyone who has bought me a coffee!!! Maybe one day we’ll be able to have a coffee in person. Mucho love.
Notes on Street Photography - Part Two
In Part One of Notes on Street Photography I wrote about being prepared for a day of shooting. The better that you are prepared the easier it will be to concentrate on observing and shooting.
There are many things to consider when shooting street photography. I had thought that maybe there was a logical order to present this to you. But when we photograph it isn’t always obvious what comes first.
How you see your environment is one thing that I will cover in another installment of this series. But before that, we already step into the arena with images we have seen throughout our lives. Some specifically about photography. Others about images in general.
Street Photography is Like Hip-Hop Music
You Are Always Sampling the Work of Others
All Art is a Dialogue With the Past
Who Are You Sampling?
I am always sampling Daido Moriyama and Saul Leiter to name my two favorites. I will in upcoming issues discuss a number of photographers. There are so many amazing photographers to be inspired by.
Biweekly Photo Assignment - Eyes
Any photo in which the eyes are an important element. They don’t need to be a human. Could be a mannequin. Creativity is always a plus.
This is a voluntary assignment if you want to take part. You can submit your photos to the Facebook group for Shoot New York City and also on Instagram tag @shootnewyorkcity. If you're not a member of the Facebook group yet, all you have to do is request to join.
Further Viewing
It’s always good to spend time looking at the photography of others!
Upcoming Workshops
Workshops are a maximum of 5 people Workshops are only scheduled on weekend days. If you would like to have a weekday workshop or a workshop in other areas of NYC, let me know with some lead time and I’ll see if others want to also attend it. Otherwise I continue to provide private workshops on weekdays and in other neighborhoods.
For those who haven't done a workshop or photo tour with me in the past I have a number of reviews on my website and also on TripAdvisor! Workshops are both for people who live here and also travelers, as are photo tours.
Photo tours are one-on-one and arranged on an individual basis for both neighborhood and photographic style and can be designed as a workshop as well. They are customized to your interests and level.
